In God We Trust
Enigma
1988
The band's 1988 follow-up to their multi-platinum selling To Hell With The Devil is a bit more toned down this time around. Mostly, this had to do with then record label Enigma hedging their bets to get another "Honestly"-like hit. What resulted was a record with more mid-tempo rockers and syrupy-sweet ballads than scorching metal anthems, and consequently fewer sales than with To Hell With The Devil. Mind you, the 80s metal is there- on opening title track "In God We Trust", "The Writing's On The Wall" and "The Reign", but songs like "Always There For You", "Keep The Fire Burning", "I Believe In You" and "Lonely" bring the hyperactivity down a few notches. Still as strong and evangelical lyrically as ever. What it boils down to is In God We Trust happens to be the album I listen to once in a while, as opposed to The Yellow & Black Attack and To Hell With The Devil...not bad, a classic to be sure, but not stellar...
